Juanita Slusser

Juanita (Romine) Slusser, 88, passed away peacefully leaving behind a rich legacy of love, faith, and cherished memories across generations on September 16, 2026.

Born on August 17, 1938, on the family farm in Harveyville, Kansas, to Carroll and Fern Romine, she grew up with a deep appreciation for home and family. After graduating from Harveyville Rural High School in 1956, she moved to Topeka to begin working at a doctor’s office—a move that would pave the way for the next chapter of her life.

It was in Topeka that a blind date introduced her to Galen Slusser. The two were united in marriage on May 25, 1957, beginning a remarkable 69-year journey together. In 1962, Galen’s work with the Kansas Turnpike brought them to Wichita, where they settled to raise their four children. Once her children were grown, she re-entered the workforce, dedicating many years of service as a tax analyst and later as an office clerk for the State of Kansas.

Family was always at the absolute center of her world. She cherished hosting Sunday dinners, bringing everyone together over her famous homemade lasagna, and ensured every family birthday was special by baking the guest of honor’s favorite cake. In 1970, she and Galen purchased a lake house in Oklahoma, creating a cherished haven where generations gathered. Her favorite moments were spent taking boat rides and sitting peacefully on the porch—holding a new baby or watching her grandchildren and great-grandchildren play.

Juanita loved shopping, playing cards, and planning road trips, eventually accomplishing her goal of visiting all 50 U.S. states as well as traveling throughout Europe. She was an active member of her community, participating in Extension Homemakers Units (EHU), the Altar Society at St. Anne Church, the Red Hat Society, and local Bunco groups over the years.

Juanita is preceded in death by her parents, Carroll and Fern Romine; brothers, Dean, Leroy, John, and Wayne Romine; son, Galen Richard Slusser JR; granddaughter, Melinda Slusser; and great grandson, Theo Claeys.

She is survived by her husband, Galen Slusser; sister, Doris Faye Romine; brothers, Everett and Earl Romine; son, Randy (Linda) Slusser; daughters, Rita (Jim) Pedigo and Renae Slusser; grandsons, Jason (Jessica) Pedigo and Zachary (Anne) Slusser; granddaughters, Jaime (Tyler) Miranda, Jacquelyn (Eric) Johnston, Amber Marshall, Stephanie (Ryan) Kinsler, Haley (Blake) Claeys, and Marin Slusser; and 17 great grandchildren.

Rosary will be at 7:00 p.m., Monday, September 21, 2026, at Downing & Lahey West Mortuary. Mass will be at 10:30 a.m., Tuesday, September 22, 2026, at Church of the Holy Spirit Catholic Church in Goddard. Graveside will be at 11:30 a.m., Tuesday, September 22, 2026, at Resurrection Cemetery.
