Margaret “Marge” Mayer, 93, Homemaker, died Saturday, May 2, 2026. Rosary will be at 10:00 AM, Funeral Mass will be at 10:30 AM, Friday, May 8, 2026, both at St. Francis of Assisi Catholic Church.
Margaret Elizabeth Mayer was born August 7, 1932, the fifth and youngest child of Peter and Mary (Feltes) Weber, in Dubuque, Kansas. Raised on the family farm, Margaret graduated from Sacred Heart Academy (now Newman University) and received her teaching credentials from Ft. Hays State University. In her school years, Marge enjoyed playing french horn, piano, and singing. She taught elementary school, including at St. Mary Magdalene Catholic School in Wichita. She also worked for a time in an accountant’s office. Marge married her husband of 69 years, Richard (Dick) Mayer, in Dubuque, Kansas in 1956. Dick was sent to Germany with the Army in 1957, and Marge soon joined him. During and following the time they were stationed there, they traveled throughout Europe, on occasion accompanied by Marge’s parents. They recalled these travels as adventures of a lifetime. In June 1959 they returned home to Kansas City until moving back to Wichita in April 1961.
Marge’s life was characterized by her faith, faithfulness, and volunteerism. She was never one to want to lead, but always one to serve until her health no longer allowed it. She served her church in many roles including cleaning, plant watering, school lunchroom helper, Eucharistic Minister, communion calls, Tobit’s, and she was a member of the Serra Club. When her kids were young, she was a familiar face for all school field trips, games, and concerts and in the grocery store, with frequent stops to say hi or talk to people. Her hands were not idle as she had a routine to keep her house in order, meals on the table, the cookie jar filled and do “her therapy” by playing solitaire.
Marge is preceded in death by her parents, Peter and Mary Margaret Weber; sisters, Florentine Weber, Sr. Stella Weber; brothers, Bernard Weber, LaVerne (LJ) Weber; and husband, Richard Mayer. She is survived by son, Chris Mayer of Wichita, KS; daughter, Julie (Theron) Moss of Delia, KS; grandson, Grady Moss; and granddaughter Payton (Kirsten) Mitchell, as well as two nephews and several nieces.
