Patrick E. O’Shaughnessy of Wichita, Kansas, passed away on October 1, 2026, at the age of 83, leaving behind a legacy of professional accomplishment, tremendous personal integrity, and most of all, dedication to his wife of 63 years, Kathy Coffey O’Shaughnessy, and their six children.
Funeral Mass will be at 10:00 a.m., Wednesday, October 7, 2026, at St. Thomas Aquinas Catholic Church.
Patrick Everett O’Shaughnessy was born in Wichita, KS on May 30, 1943, the fourth child of John F. O’Shaughnessy and Lucille (Weigand) O’Shaughnessy. He was the grandson of I.A. and Lillian G. O’Shaughnessy of St. Paul, Minnesota and J.P. and Agnes Weigand of Wichita, Kansas. He attended Blessed Sacrament Catholic School in Wichita, followed by Chaplain Kapaun Memorial High school where he graduated in 1960. He attended the University of Notre Dame in South Bend, IN, graduating in 1965 with a degree in Business Administration. While still attending Notre Dame, he married the love of his life, Kathy (Coffey) O’Shaughnessy, and they started their family. They were gifted with six children between 1964 and 1972.
Patrick began his career as a stockbroker at AG Edwards before leaving to work with his grandfather I.A. and father John at Lario Oil & Gas and Globe Refining Company. He devoted the rest of his professional life to the company, eventually serving as President and then as Chairman of its board, a position he retired from in 2010. His career reflected a deep familiarity with the energy industry and a sustained commitment to the business and its continued success. During his years at Lario, Patrick also served on the Board of Directors of Bank IV in Wichita, where he made some of his closest professional friends and colleagues.
Beyond his professional responsibilities, Patrick maintained a strong connection to higher education. He served on the advisory council of the Mendoza College of Business at the University of Notre Dame for many years. At Kansas Newman College, now Newman University, Patrick participated on the Board of Trustees for almost a decade, including serving a term as Chairman. He was awarded the St. John Henry Newman Medal, the University’s highest honor, in 1995, and in 2014, both he and his wife, Kathy, were awarded honorary degrees.
Patrick’s commitment to the Catholic Church was an important part of his life. He served multiple terms on the Finance and Investment Committees of the Diocese of Wichita and on the Board of Holy Family Center. He and his wife were strong supporters of their parishes over many decades: Blessed Sacrament, Church of the Magdalen and St. Thomas Aquinas. In recognition of their contributions to the Church, Patrick and Kathy were named a Knight Commander and Dame of the Pontifical Order of St. Gregory the Great by Pope John Paul II in 1998. The honor is among the distinctions conferred by the Holy See on laypeople in recognition of exceptional service to the Church and society.
While Patrick’s professional and civic accomplishments were substantial, his life was about much more than business and public recognition. He was a great athlete in his youth, played squash and tennis as a young adult, and golf well into his 70s. He enjoyed good times with good friends, winter ski trips to Colorado, and traveling to places as far as China and Morocco. As he grew older, he loved spending time in the Palm Desert sun. But nothing was more important to him than his wife, children and grandchildren. His favorite moments throughout his life were sitting at the head of the large family dining room table surrounded by their love and laughter.
Patrick was a generous, constant, devoted friend, husband, father and grandfather, and his memory will be a blessing to all who knew him.
Patrick is survived by his wife, Kathy Coffey O’Shaughnessy, his children, daughter Lucy and son-in-law Joe Ryan, son Patrick, son Danny and daughter-in-law Jennifer, daughter Brigid and son-in-law Steve Roe, son Michael and daughter-in-law Natalie, daughter Molly and son-in-law Steve Vestring, and his eighteen beloved grandchildren.
He is predeceased by his brothers, John, Brian and Nashe O’Shaughnessy, his sister Mary O’Shaughnessy, his nephew Timothy O’Shaughnessy, and his daughter-in-law Jeanie (Poole) O’Shaughnessy.
