Timothy Lee “Tim” Abbott, 71, passed away on October 1, 2026.
Tim was born on August 14, 1955, in Dodge City, Kansas, to Jesse and Jeanette Abbott. He grew up alongside his brothers, David, Daryl, Gregory, and Andy, and his sister, Jennifer. His family spent part of his childhood in Jetmore, Kansas, before eventually moving to Wichita. Tim graduated from Bishop Carroll High School in 1974.
Tim spent approximately 40 years working in construction. Over the course of his career, he built, remodeled, and repaired hundreds of homes throughout the area. Working with his hands was simply part of who Tim was, and retirement never completely took that away from him. Even at 71, he was still taking on projects and was working on siding his own home right up until the day he passed away.
Tim was a lifelong sports fan. He loved the Baltimore Orioles and Kansas City Chiefs, but his greatest sports passion was Wichita State Shocker basketball. A devoted Shocker fan, Tim held season tickets beginning with the 2002–2003 season and spent more than two decades cheering on the Shockers.
As much as Tim enjoyed sports himself, nothing compared to watching his sons compete. He was incredibly proud of Chris and his college baseball career; Nick and his high school and college cross country and baseball careers; and Troy and his basketball career at Southwestern College and later overseas. Through countless games, meets, seasons, wins, and losses, Tim was a constant presence. He rarely, if ever, missed an opportunity to be there supporting his sons from the stands or sidelines.
That devotion continued when Tim became a grandfather. He loved watching Mason and Wesley play sports and could often be found on the sidelines cheering them on—and offering a little coaching along the way. Some of his favorite times with his grandsons were also the simple ones: having them over to swim in the backyard pool, taking them to activities throughout Wichita, and simply being involved in their lives.
Outside of family and sports, Tim enjoyed golfing and fishing. Whether he was on the golf course, fishing, watching a game, working on a house, or spending time with his family, Tim was happiest staying active and being around the people and things he cared about.
Tim is survived by his wife, Carolyn Abbott; his sons, Chris (Kim) Abbott, Nick (Tina) Abbott, and Troy Baker; his grandchildren, Mason and Wesley; Judy Abbott, mother of Chris and Nick; his brothers, David (Wilma) Abbott, Daryl (LouAnn) Abbott, and Gregory Abbott; and his sister, Jennifer DeVaney.
He was preceded in death by his parents, Jesse and Jeanette Abbott, and his brother, Andrew “Andy” Abbott, who passed away in 1979.
Memorial Service will be at 3:00 p.m., Saturday, October 10, 2026, at Downing & Lahey West Mortuary.
